Legion of Super-Heroes #47 Things I didn't think I'd be typing in a Legion of Super-Heroes review: There an angry dog on the cover. We've had camel aliens. And bugs. But dogs now? This strongly looks like a fill-in issue. It's called "Dream Wedding, Blind Love" with no reference to the Enemy Manifest storyline and I'm guessing this means we're taking a break from the planetary threat and all the other romantic subplots. Written by Jim Shooter with pencils by Rick Leonardi and inks by Dan Green... which would've been an amazing creative team on an X-book in 1985 but I'm not sure what they'll do in 2008. We begin with Brainiac 5 analyzing the weapon he cut off Chameleon's body last issue (seriously... he got Cham to recreate a piece of alien tech, which is when we found out that Cham doesn't just look like whatever he turns into, he can recreate complex mechanical objects as well... which makes no sense... and then Brainy cut that w...

The betrayal of the century! Projectra joins the dark side! Phantom Girl reads! Out loud! We look at Legion of Super-Heroes #45 & 46

Legion of Super-Heroes #45 Quick recap: A planet has just appeared near Jupiter and its gravity well is affecting everything. The U.P. President has called the Legion for help. Oh, and the Legion is now loved by the U.P. - amazing what lawsuits will do to solve problems, right? It's Enemy Manifest Part 1: Monster in our Midst by writer Jim Shooter, penciller Francis Manapul and inker Livesay. Before the Legion agrees to help, new assistant M'rissey takes over communications from Lightning Lad and gets President Kieselbach to agree to full pardons and diplomatic immunity for every Legionnaire. Wow - amazing how quickly every Legion subplot is resolved. Just as we recap everything M'rissey has done over the past couple of issues, and enjoy Phantom Girl's new costume that looks remarkably like Dave Cockrum's design from decades earlier (and it's about time), both away teams arrive at the same time, bleeding and tired. But before they can rest and recover, Light Las...

M'rissey is the new Devlin O'Ryan and two more Legionnaires just disappear! We look at Legion of Super-Heroes #43 & 44

Legion of Super-Heroes #43 We're back with Enemy Rising: Part 4 The Leader who Lost the Legion by writer Jim Shooter, penciller Francis Manapul, and inker Livesay. A group of Legionnaires have just saved Rimbor from an alien invasion, working mainly as individuals, and, as a thanks, the Rimborian government wants to arrest Ultra Boy. Not for sexual harassment, which surprises me slightly. Let's begin... What's the best way to stop the Science Police from arresting a teammate? If you're Star Boy, you increase everyone's weight tenfold and watch them crash to the ground. The team convinces Saturn Girl to run away and, I think, mind wipe everyone so they don't remember seeing the Legion. I have no idea how they'd understand why they're suddenly heavier and unable to move if they can't remember the Legion being there, or why Saturn Girl has moral problems with this after she's done it so many times, or why the S.P.s think they're able to arrest t...

A short tribute to Jim Shooter and we celebrate a return of comedy in these books. We look at Legion of Super-Heroes #41 & 42

Legion of Super-Heroes #41   We've reached Enemy Rising Part 2: Busted! by writer Jim Shooter, guest penciller Aaron Lopresti, and inker Matt Ryan. Francis Manapul as the regular artist and Lopresti now filling in. Why was this book not flying off the shelves? Can you believe DC has had so much great talent drawing the Legion and it never resulted in any sales? To recap last issue, Princess Projectra's life is falling apart. She's lost everything - her title, her family, her home world, her home, and her money and even though she no longer has any of the previous benefits she enjoyed, she still has all the legal responsibilities. She previously kinda ignored a looting, stealing a bracelet for herself, and now she's apparently lost control and killed someone. This issue begins with Timber Wolf, who's also completely out of control and ready to kill at a moment's notice, stopping her from attacking another being trying to get an autograph. The dead alien is lying ...

More financial problems! Another one-night-stand! Karate Kid has amazing body control! We look at The Legion of Super-Heroes #39 & 40

Legion of Super-Heroes #39 We've reached Evil Adventus Part 3: Downfall with writer Jim Shooter, penciller Francis Manapul, and inker Livesay. To recap what's happened since this new creative team took over, Lightning Lad is struggling as leader, making bad choices for team assignments and facing the horrors of bureaucracy and finances. Invisible Kid is in love with Giselle, an alien who can speed up her metabolism, who rejected Legion membership. Aliens have been attacking all over the galaxy but, luckily for us, the Legion doesn't have a code against killing so the battles have been bloodier than we're used to. Oh, and because Orando was destroyed by Lemnos, Projectra is no longer rich, or a princess, or has any diplomatic power. We've ignored the fact the Brainiac 5 captured Lemnos and used him in an experiment so he never faces any punishment for his crimes of genocide... Let's begin, shall we? Projectra has returned to her home to find out it was sold to pa...
